A LOOK BACK FROM SUMMER: HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE HAMPTONS SHOWHOUSE

Now that it's January and the winter blahs are upon us, I thought it would be the perfect time to share some of my favorite rooms from this summer's Hampton Designer Showhouse. Just looking at the rooms will make you feel warmer.

PORCH BY BRAD FORD INTERIOR DESIGN

Photos by John M. Hall
I recently got to know Brad this fall, after we got to talking at the Stars of Design Awards dinner, where he was my dinner partner. He has a great blog,
Design Therapy and runs a thriving design office. It turns out we know and love so many of the same people in the industry. His formative days working for Thad Hayes provide him with a knowledge of the right way to do things and his attention to detail is inspiring. In his space, he created a fantasy getaway with a porch area. A Christian Astuguevieille Rope Mirror from Holly Hunt hangs over the mantel that has a horn vase from Aero and blown glass vase from West Elm. The circular Sconces are through Hinson and Company. Brad's website is well done and you can see the rest of his work at Brad Ford I.D.

What a fun way to bring the outside in. The playful swings were custom-designed by Brad Ford I.D., built by Siegfreid’s Basement, and upholstered by Michael Tavano, in a fabric by Silver State Fabrics available to the trade at Michael Tavano. The throw pillows with nail heads are from West Elm, and Velvet Pillows and throws are from Crate and Barrel. The Fireplace Mantel is custom from Morgik Metal with a Stylized Paper-Mache Leaf from Amy Perlin Antiques. The Hollow Zig Zag Tables and ladder are from Tucker Robbins.

The Chime Art installation is from J. Prichard Design. The architectural floor lamp is from Robert Altman. The Abaca Rug is a limited edition rug available through Lepere with Cowhide Rugs from Patterson, Flynn and Martin layered over it.

THE MASTER BEDROOM SITTING ROOM BY HAMILTON DESIGN

Photos by Brian Park
I first heard of
Ellen Hamilton Design several years ago, when Doretta Sperduto was dong a story on her at House Beautiful. She had just opened a great space with a beautiful painted facade like those in London but in Brooklyn Heights. She is still based there and has established a business that is known for creating beautiful spaces and really listening to a client's needs. Her spaces at the showhouse were color filled, and make me feel as though I am visiting a glamorous aunt's house in a chic summer colony. A desk and chair from
from Anglo-Raj Antiques and the small yellow and green jar by the desk is from John Boone, Inc. The lumbar cushion is made of a Kathryn Ireland fabric. The mirror is from Suzanne Golden Antiques.

Chintz fabric window panels are made with fabric from Hazelton House Ltd. in Canada, and the fabulous wallpaper is Suzy Hoodless from Osborne and Little. The etagere is from Suzanne Golden Antiques.

The daybed is covered in a Carolina Irving fabric, chair is a custom Bridgewater Chair covered in a Quadrille fabric from Phoenix Custom Furniture, and the fuchsia and yellow pillows are made of Bergamo fabrics. The bright throw is Pakistani from Layla in Brooklyn, and photographic art works are from Janet Borden, Inc.

She created a great tablescape here. The lamp is Beeline Home from John Rosselli Antiques, ceramic vase is from Penine Hart Antiques in Soho, and accessories are from Ruby Beets in Sag Harbor. The antique carpet in an unexpected yellow and green palette from Doris Leslie Blau.

Lush greenery from Willowtown Gardens in Brooklyn Heights and blooms are in Siebert and Rice planters on the terrace, offset with a Dash and Albert Rug. The garden table is from Wisteria, Iron Garden Chairs are from Environment 337, Ltd in Brooklyn and the blue side table is from Tucker Robbins.

THE DEN BY CARRIER AND COMPANY

Photos by Nick Johnson
New York- based designing duo and husband and wife Jesse and Mara of
Carrier and Company make rooms comfortable and tailored. Always including antiques with patina, a jazzy pattern and great shaped pieces, their spaces make you feel like the room has been that way forever, it a good way. They created a den. It is not just a man cave, but a sanctuary for the whole family. The circa 1920 table by Brunswick from T. Grimaldi Billiards has walnut and custom marquetry inlays which is a rarity for the period. It is a fully restored 9' table with leather pockets. An antique wood frame Gout Chair with red leather webbing by Francois Lauthier from Balsamo Antiques sits next to an oxblood umbrella stand from Far Eastern Antiques. Custom frames from The Gallery of Graphic Arts house photography by Thomas Libetti, Peter Margonelli Photography, and Alene Schneierson.

Grenadine grasscloth from Twenty2 (a hip wallpaper company started by the coolest husband and wife duo, Kyra and Robertson Hartnett) on the walls and sisal rug are from AM Enterprise. A layered look is done with a new Oushak wool carpet from Darius. Made in Turkey, it sits on top of the sisal. Screens in the corners of the room create an intimate setting. The screens are a custom design by Carrier and Company through Naula Workshop using Carolina Irving Textiles in Patmos Stripe, and have been mitered to create a graphic pattern. Sitting next to the Kilim- upholstered George Smith chairs are stylized, blackened iron tripod base reading lamps made to order from Historical Materialism. A pair of custom lumbar pillows made by Naula Workshop using F. Schumacher's Jamestown Strie in Aqua sit in the chairs. A place for a drink is at the ready with a traditional Chinese oxblood glazed ceramic garden seat from Far Eastern Antiques. A classically inspired H.M. Bench of blackened steel is upholstered in F. Schumacher' s Denim Texture in Mustard from Historical Materialism.

On the left: A tufted ottoman from Southampton's Old Town Crossing upholstered in F. Schumacher's Bryton Linen Herringbone in Celadon is draped with a cashmere throw from Williams-Sonoma Home. Vases are from Jefferson West Inc. In the fireplace, sit a pair of circa 1850's Italian painted wood urn-form finials with a flame motif from a favorite of mine, Sentimento Antiques. Over the mantel hangs a Treillage contemporary Eucalyptus- inspired Mirror with a gilt frame. On the right: A Swedish circa 1800 Painted Demi-Lune Table with a faux porphory top on cabriole legs from Sentimento is the perfect setting for the Elixir coral red porcelain lamp from Treillage.

  1. How wonderful to bathe in the beautiful colors of summer when it is freezing outside! I met Brad Ford in Atlanta last week and besides having exquite taste, he is also the nicest person - a true Southern gentleman!
