AFTER 30 YEARS OF GARDENING GREATNESS SMITH AND HAWKEN CLOSING

Where will gardener's go to make their garden grow? Smith and Hawken just announced that they are closing. Their website is already down and the retail stores, all 56 of them, will be liquidating over the next few months. Owner Scotts Miracle-Gro tried selling the brand, to no avail.

It takes some searching, but you may be able to hunt and gather to fill the void:

A place to find gardening delights as good would have to be Alta Tingle's Berkeley treasure since 1985, The Gardener. With stores throughout California and a great website, The Gardener sources beautiful objects and tools from around the globe.

The New York Botanical Garden Shop in the Garden is a really special shop filled with floral related jewelry, books, planters and more. Their website shows things beautifully, but it is hard to beat the experience of going there.

If you find yourself in Pennsylvania, Terrain at Styler's of Glen Mills is worth a trip. They offer landscaping services, a garden center, have a shop and adorable cafe. Anthropologie is behind Styers, namely John Kinsella, who has made this place a gem.

  2. I was more surprised that Scotts own them than they were closing. Their price point just was not in line with not only the economy but the quality of many of the products. I use to live in Michigan near their only outlet & you could get merchandise disgustingly cheap. Last season wreaths were 80% off, even my brass window boxes...a dent inside..where dirt goes so you don't see it took it from $275.00 to $50.00!!!!! What kind of mark up does that tell you & there wasnt one box there were at least a hundred in two different sizes!!!
Really not surprised but thank you so much for the other outlets. Its difficult finding better quality products.

  5. No way! How did I miss this? It's the first I'm hearing about Smith & Hawken closing. And I had no idea that Scotts Miracle-Gro owned them. That's interesting. I feel sorry for all the people losing their jobs when the 56 stores close.
